Belief In Witchcraft, Magic Serves 'Basic Human Need,' Professor Says

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2007) — People believe in magic for all sorts of reasons, Anne-Maria Makhulu said, including a deep-seated human desire for equality. Halloween is a time for children to dress up as witches, ghouls and goblins, but historically witchcraft was serious business, according to a Duke University professor.

Though people today might view witchcraft as mere superstition, it’s evident from anthropological literature that, for some people, the practice has served a basic human need, said Anne-Maria Makhulu, an assistant professor of cultural anthropology who studies the ongoing practice of witchcraft in Africa.

"We live in a bewildering world where we don’t have a lot of control. And we can imagine doing things through magic that we can’t do as ordinary human beings," said Makhulu, who is teaching a course this semester on magic and capitalism.

I'm always glad to see anthropologists quoted in the media like that. And disappointed that magic & witchcraft is pretty much the only topic we seem to get quoted on.

(There's a larger point gnawing at my subconscious here, but I can't pin it down yet.)

Is it maybe something about how dead useful anthropology can be for living in large groups of other people and recognizing the hows and whys of the rules and actions of the societies?

I'm always a bit balked by people who, at the end of my Intro to Cultural Anthro class shaking their heads and saying that they just don't understand how it can work. I make sure to give them real-life examples from their own culture! (Then again, they're also usually the ones who sleep through/skip class, so ... :wink: )

On the rare ocassions when I've talked in the past to non-pagans about witchcraft they've thought of it just in relation to spells, curses & the like. Only recently have people started to learn that it is an entire way of life, philosophy, morality/ethics & all the other things.




I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.

all of us believe in something, and some people are like that. but some of us have an open mind and close mind.. so just respect each other and dont hate.
